  • What is LYA?
    • LYA is a youth convention that is held annually for confirmed youth of our synod.  The location of the convention is different each year and includes sectionals, chapel services, and several fun events.  It runs from Thursday night through Sunday morning the last week in July.
  • Where is it this year?
    • Seattle, Washington
    • We will be staying at the University of Puget Sound.
  • How much will it cost?
    • The cost for each youth attendee is $220.  At this price, the congregation is subsidizing more than $300 per person.
    • Payment is due on or before May 6th.
    • Non-member friends will pay $400 each.
    • We don't want our youth to not come because of the cost.  If the cost of the convention would prohibit you from sending your son/daughter please talk to me.  Alternatively, if you so choose, you can also decline a portion or all of the subsidy to keep the cost low for other families.
  • How is it subsidized?
    • Money is included in the youth budget each year to offset costs.  Also, we do one or two fundraisers each year which help defray the cost even further.  The synod also gives each church a subsidy to help transport youth to convention.
  • What will the youth do there?
    • They will stay in the dormitories at the University of Puget Sound.  On-site we will eat most meals, attend morning and evening chapel, and they will also choose three sectional bible studies to attend.  They will get to have some time to explore Pike's Place Market, Mt. Rainier, dance the night away as we take a cruise on Puget Sound, and have free time and organized events on campus.  See below for a detailed itinerary of the convention.
    • On Monday we will be hiking up Mount Ellinore!  It will be about a 5 mile hike to the summit led by Pastor Pittenger from Port Orchard, WA.  Click here for a teaser video that Pastor Pittenger made especially for us!
  • Why are the youth flying this year?
    • While we typically ride coach buses, the trip this year would be too long.  Coach buses max out at about 65 mph so it would be around 30+ hours of road time.  It would be doable on the way there, but the ride back would be unbearable.  We also looked into long-haul trains but this would be nearly as expensive as flying and require two full overnights on the train one-way.  They are also subject to frequent delays of 8+ hours. One of our member families recently took a trip on this route last summer and recommended against our group taking the train to Seattle. Flying seems to be the best route to maximize our time in the Pacific Northwest!
  • What is required for my youth to fly?
    • If your son/daughter is under 18 years old, they do not need an ID to fly.  They can bring a school ID but it isn't required.  If they are over 18 when we go, they will need ID.  As of now, Minnesota driver's licenses will work as valid ID through October of 2018.
  • Who will chaperon?
    • I am organizing and coordinating the trip and will be coming along as usual.  We will also have 3 other chaperons.  One of those chaperons is a co-coordinator and will be chosen by the Board of Youth.  The other two chaperons are parents.
  • What times are the flights?
    • Minneapolis to Seattle- SY 283 Thursday, July 26 departing at 10:10 AM
    • Seattle to Minneapolis- SY 290 Monday July 30, 2018 departing 11:55 PM arrives 5:00AM - next day
  • When should attendees get to the airport?
    • Please note that we are flying out of Terminal 2
    • Youth Attendees should be dropped off at Terminal 2 between 7:30 am and 8:00 am.  There will not be a carpool from King of Grace to the airport or from the airport to King of Grace.
    • You can park and come in with them, or drop them off at Door 3.
